Infections, Inflammation, and Alzheimer's Disease with Mary Newport, MD | The Metabolic Link Ep.46
Become a member of The Metabolic Initiative to access exclusive ad-free episodes and earn CMEs: membership.metabolicinitiative.com
In this enlightening episode of The Metabolic Link, Dr. Dominic D'Agostino sits down with Dr. Mary Newport to delve into the world of Alzheimer's disease, discussing her pioneering work with ketogenic metabolic therapy. Dr. Newport shares her personal and inspiring journey with her husband, Steve, whose battle with early-onset Alzheimer's led her to discover the life-changing effects of MCT and coconut oil. Dr. Newport also explores the crucial role of nutrition in managing Alzheimer's, the potential of exogenous ketones, and the intriguing hypothesis that links infections to the disease. Listen to this episode and learn how simple dietary interventions can have profound impacts on brain health and hear inspiring success stories of individuals who've experienced significant improvements.
About Mary Newport:
Dr. Mary Newport, M.D., is a seasoned pediatrician and neonatologist with over thirty years of experience. She has been involved in founding and directing neonatal intensive care units in the Tampa Bay area. Transitioning later in her career to home hospice care and health risk assessments, Dr. Newport witnessed firsthand the transformative effects of a ketogenic nutritional intervention using coconut and medium-chain triglyceride oil on her husband, who had early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Inspired by this experience, she has become an internationally recognized author and speaker, advocating for ketones as a brain fuel alternative. Her latest book, "Clearly Keto for Healthy Brain Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention," promotes a whole food ketogenic Mediterranean-style diet and lifestyle adjustments to support brain health and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

I appreciate the information! I have been in the keto lifestyle since my mother died of dementia one year ago and have lost 82 lbs, no longer pre-diabetic but do have high cholesterol and LDL which I try not to fuss over for lack of proof that it is problem. I feel 30 yrs younger! I walk and ride a stationary bike every day; my goal is to continue the keto lifestyle into my 100's (I am 64 yrs old)! Thank you again as I use the scientific information to find my way to health, never been one to go mainstream.

If I have understood correctly, both doctors believe that eating fiber (in broccoli for instance) is a good idea for all humans…? 🤔

148 g broccoli = 3.8 g dietary fiber according to USDA, so 1 lb of broccoli only has about 12 g of fiber, not even half of 25 g. Not sure how he got 25 g of fiber from 1 lb of broccoli.

Saying that you are on a ketogenic diet does not mean you are actually on this diet. That's what he meant. You can think you are but your biological markers shows you're not. It's not about what you think you're doing it's about what your biological markers shows in the end when it comes to this diet. If we take a sample of a thousand random people on this diet and check their biological markers....how many people will actually be on this ketogenic diet after 2 months, 4 months, 6 months.... Since that's what he has been doing in his clinic for some patients for years he knows that it's less easy than people think to actually be on this diet especially long term if you don't have the possibility to check those markers and most people claiming to be on a ketogenic dier do not.

Absolute nonsense. This diet makes people sick and old. She is 51 and I was shocked. Look at raw vegan athletes. They are vital, heathy and look young. Her suggested diet will cause aging and health issues.

I have been using this for more than an year. I have realized a change in my recovery time after gym workouts and outdoor activities like hiking. My recovery got faster. For a certain hike I used to take 4 days to recover. After 6 months I realized I was recovering faster, maybe 2 to 2.5 days. The same hike now, I take just a day. While diet and sleep are major factors, this supplement definitely had contributed. When I originally started, they sold for $60 and sometimes less than $50 on sale. Now it’s gotten very expensive at $100. I’m researching on low cost alternatives. Keeping a fit body, especially good cardio is needed for these supplements to work. That’s just my experience.

I do not think that a diet will help here. The main problem seems to be a disfunctional blood brain barrier with defect tight junctions. And I think the next few years research should focus on this problem. Because no matter if the disfunction is caused by genetic reasons, drugs like methamphetamin, heroin... certain viruses and bacteria like for example covid19, but also cholera... this is what causes in the first place oxidation of the brain. And if the blood brain barrier is defect no diet can bring any real outcome here.

You need to read the work of the late Dr Kempner in the 1940s to 1970s and look at the life Work of the late Dr. John McDougall who has reversed diabetes. Your N of 1 case had the same diet twice- both were high fat SAD diets. Yes the lower carb SAD diet was a short term improvement on some markers like waste circumference, but it only impactes some symptoms; it does not reverse the underlying cause which is too much fat from all sources and too much animal peotein which is present in meat which is always high fat. The key to stopping diabetes melitus is to reduce/ eliminate fat and all animal protein, which is inseparable from fat. You can eat as much protein from vegan plant sources as you will based on your ideal weight and activity level, be it couch potato or Olympic athlete. You can't and don't explain anything that we didn't already know a hundred years ago. You can read Dr. KEMPNERS RESEARCH ON DR. john McDougall's website at www.drmcdougall.com/education/lectures-all/john-mcdougall-md-discusses-the-rice-diet-with-frank-neelon-md/

I was vegan/veg for about 20 years. Got diabetes, very advanced insulin resistance with A1C of 10.4 and fasting insulin of 19.8! basically significant advanced metabolic syndrome: HTN, arthritis, sleep disturbance/snoring and gained 100lbs. and was diagnosed with Leukemia. Went #Carnivore and then #liondiet in April 2023. 15 months later my overall health is 1000% improved. Diabetes and metabolic syndrome gone. Leukemia mutation load reversed and now non detectable. Arthritis gone, snoring/sleep apnea gone. Insulin resistance down by 50%.

Considering some skepticism from Dom on LDL/ApoB in the context of a lean, healthy, well muscled person, LMHR, I would like to see Dom and Peter Attia having a discussion, considering Tom Dayspring, Lipidologist as Peters consultant on the topic with ApoB at 50 as a tool to assist in reducing ASCVD. Understandably, that number is most helpful, especially with insulin resistance or an elevated high hsCRP

Keto for a health condition is different to keto for weight loss etc. .Please don't hesitate to start keto if you have a health condition ,because you will find the motivation to sustain it when it helps significantly ....,I assure you.
